Visitors & Guests welcome at Monthly Salons!
(See Below for Dates & Locale)
WCPC holds monthly salons in the Minneapolis Metro Area,
on the 4th Tuesday of the Month
(March - December)
at 6:30 P.M.
(See Calendar)
Since
1944, the Women's Color Photo Club of Minneapolis (WCPC) has been providing an opportunity for women to share their interest in photography.
Members enter their images, anonymously, in monthly salons (March through December).
A salon is an opportunity for members to display up to four images a month, have their images judged by an experienced photographer, and learn how almost every photograph can be improved.
Today, most images are submitted in digital format, however, members may still enter images using color slide film, print enlargements, or B&W. (A digital copy of the other formats may be required for projecting.)
An experienced judge will critique all entries before the meeting and assign each image a number between 3 and 12. Entries with a '9' or higher are "accepted" and receive an award the evening of the salon.
Winning entries in the monthly salons will then be entered into the year-end competition in December.
The benefits of competing in salons and attending meetings are many. Besides the feedback from the judge on our own images, we learn from the comments from each other, and feedback given to others. We may be inspired by someone else's image to try a new technique, shoot a new subject, attend a workshop, or plan a day trip together.
We
begin with a brief discussion about club business followed by a competitive
salon in two categories.
The first category is an Assigned Category--known several months or a year in advance. (See "Future Salon Categories.") The second category is an Open Category salon (a subject of the photographer's choosing).
Members may submit up to two images in each category (Assigned and Open), for a total of up to four entries per month.
Salon competitions are fun, informative, and anonymous. Winners are announced at the end of the salon. Judges make suggestions about how to improve an image or suggest another technique the photographer might like to try in the future. A short program, given by the evening's judge, another member, or a guest, follows the competition.
WCPC is a member of The North Central Camera Club Council (N4C), and participates in a variety of N4C activities throughout the year, including inter-club competitions, conventions, and judging.
At
the year-end meeting in December, we have a potluck (or catered) dinner and awards
are given to the top photographers. The top photographers are the three photographers with
the highest cumulative points for the year.
The
second part of Awards Night is the competition between ALL the images
that were recognized (accepted or awarded) during the year. These
entries are pooled and judged for Slide of the Year, an Award, or an Honorable
Mention.
During the year, members have the opportunity to attend affiliated educational programs, field trips, social events, and workshops on photography. WCPC also provides its own local workshops and day trips.
